Getting Your Heat Right: A Plain-English Guide to Custom Halogen Quartz Lamps
Standard heaters are fine for some things, but they often fall short when you’ve got a specific thermal load that just won’t budge. That’s where we come in. We build custom infrared lamps using halogen-filled quartz tubes that hit the target directly. Think of it like sunlight. It doesn’t waste time heating up the air in the room first; it just hits the surface and starts working. The Balancing Act: Power and Voltage Here is the thing about spec-ing a lamp: it’s all a bit of a puzzle between voltage, wattage, and how long the tube is. If we take a shorter tube and push more wattage into it, the filament gets way hotter. But you have to be careful. Your power supply needs to be a perfect match. If you over-volt the lamp? It’ll burn out in a few hours. Flat out. But if you under-volt it, you won’t get that deep heat penetration you’re looking for. It just won’t “bite.” Why Quartz and Halogen? We use high-purity quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. It can handle the shock. Inside, there’s a bit of chemistry happening called the halogen cycle. As the filament works, some tungsten evaporates. Normally, that would just coat the glass and turn it black. But the halogen gas pushes that tungsten right back onto the wire. It keeps the glass clear and the heat steady for thousands of hours. Depending on what you’re heating, you can go with clear quartz for maximum punch, or we can coat the tubes if you’re working with sensitive plastics that might melt if the wavelength is too aggressive. Fitting Them Into Your Setup We know every machine is different, so we offer a few different end-cap options. If you want something you can just swap out quickly during a maintenance shift, R7s or SK15 connectors are your best bet. They just drop right in. One quick warning, though. These lamps are powerful, but the quartz is fragile. If you drop a tool on it or—even worse—get fingerprints or oil on the glass, you’ll create a “hot spot.” That’s a one-way ticket to a cracked tube. Keep your mounting brackets tight and your glass spotless. Your lamps will thank you.
