
Stop Letting Your SIPA Oven Slow You Down
If you’re running an older SIPA machine, you know the frustration. You want to push the cycle times, but the oven just won’t keep up. You end up slowing everything down just to make sure the preforms are actually hot enough, otherwise, you’re staring at a pile of defects. It’s a bottleneck that kills your throughput. But the fix is actually pretty simple: swap out those tired old lamps for high-density infrared elements. How it actually works We lean heavily on short-wave infrared tech for these upgrades. The goal is basically to cram more wattage into every millimeter of the tube. When you do that, you’re pushing way more heat into the PET wall in a much shorter window of time. Just a heads-up: you’ve got to make sure the voltage matches your existing power rails. If it’s off, you’ll either get cold preforms or you’ll pop a filament the second you flip the switch. We usually set these up for a fast ramp-up, so you aren’t sitting around waiting for the machine to warm up. The gear We use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because cheap glass bows when it gets hot, and that ruins your heat distribution. We also use halogen-filled filaments. They last longer and keep the temperature steady. As for the fit, we stick to the basics like R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re drop-in replacements. You don’t have to mess with the wiring or tear the oven apart. You just pull the old tubes out and slide the new ones in. Easy. The catch Now, more heat isn’t a magic wand. It comes with a trade-off. When you crank up the output, the inside of the oven gets a lot hotter. If your cooling blowers are clogged with dust or just too small for the job, you’re asking for trouble. You could fry your electronics or end up with “pearlization” in the PET—those annoying little cloudy streaks in the plastic. The trick is finding that sweet spot. You have to balance the lamp wattage with how much air your oven can actually move. Get that right, and your bottle quality stays rock solid while your production speed climbs.
