
Getting the Heat Right: A Guide to Our Halogen IR Lamps
We offer our halogen IR lamps in a few different strengths—500W, 800W, 1200W, and 1500W. We do this because every setup is different, and you need to be able to dial in exactly how much heat is hitting your target. Think of these as precision tools. Instead of just warming up the air in a room, they shoot thermal energy straight to whatever you’re aiming at. It’s a much more direct way of doing things. Picking your power The wattage you choose basically decides how big your “warm zone” is. If you’re just warming up a few plants or a small brooding area, the 500W lamp is usually plenty. It gives you a gentle, manageable gradient. But if you’re dealing with a massive enclosure or a freezing cold environment, you’ll want the 1500W. It puts out a huge amount of radiant heat. Just a heads-up: if you go with the 1500W, double-check your wiring and sockets. These units pull a lot of current, and you don’t want your terminals melting because the wires weren’t up to the task. Why quartz and halogen? Inside the lamp, we use a halogen cycle wrapped in a quartz envelope. Now, the halogen gas is there for a reason—it stops the tungsten filament from evaporating and clouding up the glass. That means the lamp stays clear and keeps pumping out consistent heat for a lot longer. We use quartz because it’s tough. These lamps go through rapid heating and cooling cycles, and standard glass would just crack under that kind of stress. Quartz handles it without breaking a sweat. Using them in the field Whether you’re raising chicks or growing plants, these lamps get the job done. For livestock, it mimics the warmth of a mother hen. For your garden, the IR spectrum actually sinks into the leaves to help stimulate growth. But you have to be smart about where you put them. High-wattage lamps create intense hotspots. If you hang a 1500W lamp too low, you’re going to scorch your plants or stress out your animals. It happens. To avoid that, I always recommend using a dimmer or a thermostat. And one last tip: try not to run them at full blast 24/7. If you do, the filament is going to burn out a lot faster. Give the equipment a break, and it’ll last you much longer.
