
Getting Your Wood-Mizer Heat Right
If you’re building out a smart factory, you probably already know that your heat source can’t just be “hot.” It needs to be smart. It has to listen to your PLC commands instantly, or the whole line falls out of sync. For those of us running Wood-Mizer gear or similar automated lines, shortwave infrared (IR) lamps are the way to go. Why? Because they kill the lag. You don’t have to wait around for a convection oven to warm up the air. It’s all about the physics. Shortwave IR doesn’t waste time heating the air around the wood; it hits the fibers directly. It’s immediate. This is huge for an automated cell. Your heating zone can actually keep pace with your conveyor. If the feed rate slows down, the power drops right then and there. No guesswork. No scorched edges. The nitty-gritty on hardware When you’re swapping out a lamp, don’t wing it. You’ve got to match the original wattage and voltage exactly. If you don’t, you’re either going to blow a fuse or end up with under-heated wood. We stick with high-density quartz tubes. Sawmills are dusty, messy places, and these tubes can actually take a beating without giving up. To get this working with a smart grid, you’ll likely use SCR power controllers. It’s the best way to keep your temperature in a tight window, even when you’re switching between different wood species or dealing with varying moisture levels. A word of caution Here’s the catch: high-wattage IR puts out a massive amount of heat. It’s great for throughput, but it puts a lot of stress on the machine frame. You’ve got to make sure your fans and ventilation are actually up to the task. If the air around the lamp housing gets too stifling, you’ll fry your electrical connectors and wear out the quartz envelope way faster than you should. Keep the airflow clear. Your equipment will thank you.
