
Can New Lamps Actually Speed Up Your SIG Machine?
I get asked this all the time by guys running older SIG blow molding machines: “If I just swap out the heating elements, will I actually get more bottles out the door?” The short answer? Yes. But it’s not magic—it’s about how the heat actually hits the plastic.
The deal with heat density
Here is the thing about PET: you need to hit that “sweet spot” temperature (the glass transition point) fast, but you can’t just blast it with raw heat or you’ll scorch the surface. If your current lamps are old, dim, or the quartz has gone cloudy, your heaters have to run longer to do the same job. That’s just wasted electricity and a slower machine. We build our replacement lamps to push more short-wave infrared energy. By using a higher wattage-to-length ratio, you’re basically shoving more thermal energy into the preform every second. It’s faster. Much faster. And that means your cycle times drop.
No need to rewire everything
Nobody wants to spend a weekend rewiring a control panel. We get that. That’s why we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re drop-in replacements. You pull the old one out, pop the new one in, and you’re back in business. We also use heavy-wall quartz glass. It holds up better under high heat so you aren’t replacing them every few months. Plus, the lengths are precise. When the lamp sits flush in the reflector, you don’t get those annoying “cold spots” that leave your bottles with uneven walls.
A quick heads-up on the trade-offs
Now, more power isn’t a free lunch. If you bump up the wattage to push your bottles-per-minute (BPM), your oven is going to get hotter. Your cooling fans have to keep up. If your vents are clogged or just too small, that ambient heat builds up and your preforms might warp before they even hit the mold. So, do yourself a favor: check your airflow before you switch the array. And for heaven’s sake, make sure your lamp voltage matches your transformer exactly. Otherwise, you’ll just blow the filaments and be right back where you started.
